Go8 Deans of Medicine

Go8 universities make major contributions to health workforce training,  health and medical research, and health outcomes in Australia. They:

*      train in excess of 75% of all students enrolled in  courses leading to registration as a medical practitioner in Australia,  and a significant proportion of other health professionals;         
*     have longstanding working relationships with most Australian teaching hospitals and medical research institutes;          
*     are actively engaged in training of medical specialists;          
*     account for 60% of medical research activity supported through the  National Health and Medical Research Council, with broad strengths  across key fields including clinical medicine, molecular biology and  genetics, immunology, primary care and preventative medicine,  neuroscience and behaviour, public health, pharmacology, psychology and  psychiatry; and          
*    

produce in excess of 6,000 peer reviewed journal articles in medical and health related fields annually.

The Group of Eight Universities and the five largest Medical Research Institutes (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Baker IDI and Diabetes Institute, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Garvan Institute) undertake over 80% of competitively funded Australian medical research.

These thirteen universities and institutes have collaborated in the preparation of a joint submission to the Strategic Review of Health and Medical Research in Australia, being undertaken by a panel chaired by Mr Simon McKeon.
